Midwestern Import: Steak ‘n Shake

Midwestern Import: Steak ‘n Shake

For months, there’s been a curious under-construction storefront in New York. For months, I thought it was a mirage. COMING SOON, its Tyvek-sheathed windows announced. STEAK ‘N SHAKE. And last Thursday, it opened to late-night acclaim. Now, I’m no great Steak ‘n Shake fanatic. It’s pretty much the diner equivalent of a limp handshake. But like a relative visiting town who you have nothing in common with but blood, I was still curious about this Mid-American arrival. First … Read entire article »

A Letter to the McDouble, the Dollar Menu Dupe

A Letter to the McDouble, the Dollar Menu Dupe

Dearly beloved McDouble, Look, baby — it’s not that I don’t love you. Two mostly-beef patties spooning with one another within a sweet, greasy bun, separated only by two gooey sheets of cheese, and crowned with a tiara of pickles, onions, and condiments? You’re my dream sandwich come true. No, McDouble, this has nothing to do with how you can be used as the outer shell of the notorious McGangBang, or how you delight my taste buds … Read entire article »

Not-So-Happy Meal: Investigating Happy Meal Toys Before the Ban

Not-So-Happy Meal: Investigating Happy Meal Toys Before the Ban

A few weeks ago, councilman Leroy Comrie in Queens started murmurs that McDonald’s might be barred from including toys in Happy Meals in New York City. But foodies, do kids really yearn for Happy Meal toys? Maybe my privilege is showing, but Happy Meal toys were always … lackluster. And this wasn’t just because I was a girl and thus denied the thrill of Transformers and Hot Wheels. With the exception of Teeny Beanies, those miniaturized … Read entire article »

Bacon, Egg & Cheese & the Bodega

Bacon, Egg & Cheese & the Bodega

Watching Seinfeld as a kid in the Midwest was like watching a transmission from another planet: a planet called Adulthood in New York City. Sure, Friends was ostensibly set in New York as well, but it pandered toward a middle American idea of New York, all cab rides (uh …), coffeeshops (I guess?) and spacious, affordable apartments (LULZ). Phoebe never got stuck in the subway on her way to a birthday party, Chandler never leap-frogged … Read entire article »

“Iconic” New York: Whopper Bar

Living in New York, I forego what most out-of-towners would consider “iconic New York.” I’ve never seen the ball drop; I go out of my way to avoid Times Square; and I’ve only seen the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade once (I use the word “seen” loosely, because Evan Williams egg nogg has an alarmingly high alcoholic content and can be put in a thermos). It’s not because I don’t have time — it’s because a lot of these attractions are not that great. After sitting on the wall of Central Park for five hours at the Macy’s parade, my butt was completely asleep and all I had to show for it was a few half-hearted waves from washed-up celebrities. As for Times Square? No, I do not want to see your stupid comedy … Read entire article »
